Special Projects Currently Underway

In addition to keeping our five operating coaches on the road, we currently have several projects underway.

  1. Work on the GMC 3714 (the 102) continues with the initial start up of the engine taking place in mid June at the Barn. It runs well and is even trying to move forward as it is revved. It is a project of major proportion and we need volunteers now. This 1958 GMC 3714 coach was originally the property of Roanoke City Lines—a private company in Roanoke that succeeded the original Safety Motor Transit Company. This coach, found in a field in Floyd County, was moved to the Buseum for active restoration in 2004.

  2. The second project is the restoration of our 1947 Mack Transit bus formerly used by Roanoke’s Saftey Motor Transit. It is a much longer-range project than the GMC above. It will require major engine and transmission work, as well as inside restoration.

  3. Restoration of our 1976 Flxible ( Valley Metro) 35 ft newlook continues. Fred Donaher has almost totally completed the interior restoration and we need only few minor mechanical repairs to get it running.  Most notably, we need an alternator and once we have it running, must check the brake system and the drivetrain. This bus was damaged severly in the flood of 2003.

  4. The only item we need to do on our 1990 fFlxible Metro from the Greater Richmond Transit Company is to paint the exterior. It will be returned to its beige and orange original livery. It is in wonderful shape and runs like a dream.

  5. Thanks to the Virginia Museum of Transportation, the original signage from the Roanoke Trailways Bus Station is now in our collection. Our President had gotten the ROANOKE TIMES   to donate them to the VMT long before they asked us to consider forming the CC&T. It had been stored by them for over 20 years and now is in our shop. The oval CONTINENTAL TRAILWAYS  sign is working and can be seen in the shop on worknights.

Future Possibilities

We are working on a plan to do tours of the Roanoke Valley including the possibility of using our coaches to connect the major tourist attractions from Downtown to the Zoo and Star and on to Explore Park. We will need lots of help organizing and presenting this project if we are given the go ahead.
